I never got to see a panto this Christmas, so I decided to go and see one after Christmas instead. The New Stagers, based in Wandsworth, put on this original show, set at a rather ramshackle hotel on Christmas Eve. Supposedly haunted, the hotel has in fact been taken over by Father Christmas and his elves, but a couple of elves have gone rogue and unleashed “the Beast”. Antics ensue as the staff and the few hotel guests try to save Christmas.
I thought the show was great fun, with songs, dancing and terrible jokes that were so bad they were good. The performers were great, and obviously having a fantastic time. Special mention should go to Mark Stannett as Mrs White and Christina Myers as Elf 7, who seemed to be channelling Alice from The Vicar of Dibley.
Crazy Christmas at the Haunted Hotel did drag slightly in the second act, and I thought it could have been shortened. Overall, though, I thought it was great fun.
