The final show in Found111, the former St Martin’s College of Art on Charing Cross Road, is Fool for Love, a play by Sam Shepard. The setting is a motel room, where former lovers Eddie and May meet; Eddie is trying to persuade May to leave with him and start over. The pair obviously have a history, and there is a mysterious moustached figure, seemingly existing only in the mind of whoever he is speaking to, hovering over the scene. Over the course of an hour we learn who the mystery man is, and reveal more about the couple.
For some reason the play reminded me of an episode of a big US TV series, if that episode had a season’s worth of revelations crammed into one short hour. It was intense and absorbing, with Adam Rothenberg as Eddie, Lydia Wilson as May and Joe McGann as the Old Man who observes the action all giving strong performances.
