Norma was my first opera by Bellini, another one I attended with my friend who encouraged me to give it a go. It is a tragedy, telling the story of the priestess Norma, who loves the leader of the forces who have overcome her people. Despite having two children by him, his love has faded and he has fallen in love with another priestess.
The opera dates from 1831; this production, which is a co-production with Opéra national de Paris, is directed by Àlex Ollé. The plot is reminiscent of the classic play Medea in parts, but in other respects is very different. I really enjoyed it, and found it moving and enjoyable, particularly Sonya Yoncheva’s performance as the title character. A very different experience to The Barber of Seville, but hugely rewarding.
