Lungs by Duncan Macmillan tells the story of a couple, played by Sian Reese-Williams and Abdul Salis, set against the context of growing environmental concerns, use of resources and the environmental cost of raising a child. We are introduced to M and W as they meet for the first time, fall in love, marry and suffer heartbreak before breaking up and eventually reuniting. It’s a whirlwind tour of one relationship which takes place in just over an hour, tinged with a wider planetary context – a love story for the twenty-first century.
Reese-Williams and Salis give superb performances, delivering quick-fire dialogue and conveying both happiness and grief in a compelling manner. Overall, this is an enjoyable and thought-provoking play.
