‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore

This powerful production of John Ford’s famous play made the most of its authentic setting at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe. It starred Max Bennett and Fiona Button as the doomed lovers Giovanni and Annabella, and did not shy away from the passion and powerful feeling inherent in the play. An amusing subplot saw James Garnon give a great performance as Bergetto, before making an appearance in the second half as the sinister Cardinal.

I found this production of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore much more absorbing and easier to follow than the Cheek By Jowl one I saw earlier this year. This playhouse is the perfect setting for this Jacobean tragedy and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
