Up From Paradise

As an Arthur Miller fan, I was intrigued to see a performance of his only musical at the New Wimbledon Studio. Up From Paradise was based on his play The Creation of the World and Other Business. Packed with great tunes by Stanley Silverman, the show is about the “first family” according to the Bible, with Adam and Eve, God and Lucifer, and Cain and Abel making appearances.

Though fantastical in nature, the play reflects Miller’s focus on familial relationships, particularly in the second half. It has several witty lines, and there are engaging performances from all the cast, including Alexander Elwood as Adam and Susanna Squires as Eve. In particular, Alex Wingfield gave a compelling and unsettling performance as Lucifer.

This show by PK Productions is a strong one, well worth seeing, particularly if you are curious about Arthur Miller being involved with a musical!
