Skylight

David Hare’s Skylight was always going to be one of the big hits of the summer, mainly because it stars Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan. I managed to nab myself a seat (albeit up in the balcony) and settled down to watch.

The play concerns a meeting between former lovers Kyra (Mulligan) and Tom (Nighy). Tom has come to visit Kyra in her cold, basic flat, where she lives while teaching underprivileged children. The play explores their relationship, why Kyra left, their views and their lives now. I won’t say that the play filled me with wonder, but both the lead actors gave strong performances, and their characters were well-rounded and nuanced.
