A Handful of Stars

Billy Roche’s 1988 play was recently revived at Theatre503 in south London, starring none other than Boyzone’s Keith Duffy. I was curious to see what he was like as an actor, but while I ended up enjoying his performance, I was also impressed by the rest of the cast and the play as a whole.

A Handful of Stars is about the teenage Jimmy Brady, powerfully played by Ciaran Owens, a rebellious and aggressive young man who spends his time down the local pool hall with his friend Tony (Brian Fenton) and older boxer Stapler (Duffy). His life has little going for it, and Jimmy appears to be on a path to self-destruction. There is little plot, but Owens’ mesmerising performance makes up for this.
