I am a fan of Terry Pratchett, and have been aware for a while that several of his Discworld novels have been adapted for the stage. I saw one of these, Guards! Guards!, on my first visit to the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham.
Adapted by Stephen Briggs, the play is based on the first novel about the Night Watch, including one of my favourite characters, Sam Vimes. As an amateur production it would be unfair of me to apply the same standards as I would to a West End show, but in fact the production was an excellent one, and I enjoyed it more than some of the professional shows I’ve seen. Some of the credit for this must go to Pratchett and Briggs, of course, but a large part is due to the cast and crew at the Bob Hope Theatre. My favourite character was Death, who appeared at opportune moments with a lighted scythe, but I also loved the dragon puppets, the men of the Watch and the other assorted characters of Ankh-Morpok. I would happily go out of my way to see an amateur production at this theatre again.
