I went to the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in north London to see the musical City of Angels – a fantastic show inspired by Forties film noir. It was performed by an amateur cast, but they were all of an incredibly high standard, particularly the actor playing the writer.
With a book by Larry Gelbart, lyrics by David Zippel and music by Cy Coleman, the show tells the story of a frustrated screenwriter trying to pen a detective movie. Characters in ‘real life’ have their counterparts in the ‘movie’, and as twist follows twist, the two worlds intertwine more and more.
I loved this: it was funny and clever and the music was great. I’d love to see a professional production of it, and I’ve heard rumours that the Donmar will be doing one later this year – I certainly hope so!
